Junior System Engineer

Work Environment
The Directorate of Special Units (DSU) within the Federal Police is a highly specialized unit that provides tactical support for local and federal police. It focuses on tackling serious organized crime and terrorist/extremist activities and is deployed both within Belgium and abroad. The DSU operates from services in Brussels and decentralized locations.
Role Description
As part of the Special Units Directorate, the emphasis has been on integrating and optimizing technology to support the diverse missions of the unit. Due to the highly specialized nature of its missions, the unit has developed its own software solutions. These solutions have garnered interest from foreign partners, leading to the desire to establish a software ecosystem to facilitate operational communication at the European level.
You will join the infrastructure team within the ICT Corporate department. Your primary responsibility will be contributing to the implementation of the software infrastructure (CI/CD, Kubernetes, etc.) and its integration with the unit's physical infrastructure (servers, network, etc.).
Key Responsibilities:
Kubernetes:
Configure and optimize Dashboard, API Gateway, Load Balancer, and Permissions for cluster access.
Optimize Config Maps, Secrets, and Storage (PV, PVC).
Define and implement DNS strategy and manage TLS certificates.
Implement an internal registry for storing images.
Perform monitoring and scalability testing.
CI/CD:
Implement a code management platform (e.g., GitLab).
Set up automated deployment tools (e.g., GitLab CI/CD pipelines).
Project Management & Documentation:
Implement a project management platform integrated with CI/CD and automated deployment tools (e.g., Jira).
Implement a documentation platform (e.g., Confluence).
Profile Requirements:
Education: Master's degree in Computer Science, or a Bachelor's degree with at least 3 years of relevant experience.
Experience: Previous experience in a similar role is a significant advantage.
Technical Skills:
Expertise in DevOps concepts and agile principles.
In-depth knowledge of setting up and configuring Kubernetes clusters.
Experience in integrating external storage systems with Kubernetes clusters.
Knowledge of DNS and TLS certificate management, particularly in multi-site production environments.
Experience setting up and using Azure DevOps, Jira, and Jenkins.
Familiarity with collaborative tools such as Confluence is a plus.
Proven track record in high-availability and robust projects.
Personal Attributes:
Strong stress-resilience and emotional control under pressure.
Ability to make sound decisions in challenging situations.
Proficiency in technical English; knowledge of a second national language is a plus.
